Ossory Butler's Magical Mystery Tour

So, on Saturday 25 October he was collected, along with his wife/partner/friend, and the Magical Mystery Tour began. Of course, the organisers had neglected to inform Mr O.M.A. Butler that his mystery destination was the Emerald Isle of Ireland and a visit to the ancestral home of the Butlers, Kilkenny and specifically to the village from where his grandfather emigrated to Australia, Inistioge in County Kilkenny, so the arrival at Heathrow Airport was somewhat of a surprise. After a short flight to Dublin and an overnight in a very comfortable bed and breakfast, the tour began.
First stop on the tour was the monastery founded by St Kevin in Glendalough in the 6th century. Amongst the many legends concerning St Kevin are that he lived to the age of 120 and that one day when he was at prayer a blackbird laid an egg in one of his outstretched hands. The saint remained in the same position until it was hatched.
Following a beautiful drive through the Wicklow Mountains and lunch at The Meeting of the Waters in the Vale of Avoca, the tour visited Avondale, the home of the Irish Nationalist Charles Stuart Parnell, and now a forestry school.
