Boy, did I \u201cmis-speak\u201d the other day when I wrote about the \u201ccold\u201d weather which has moved in. That was nothing! We\u2019ve had rain and wind from the north and the temperatures have plummeted to single figures. Come on! It\u2019s still September!<\/p>\n<p>Ms Playchute received a letter a few weeks ago inviting her to present herself at the Daventry Medical Centre on Thursday for a mammogram. Nothing particularly unusual in that \u2013 it\u2019s a regular occurrence \u2013 women of a certain age get invited to come along every so often and have their breasts mangled by the NHS\u2019s finest breast mangling machine.<\/p>\n<p>What amused me about the invitation was \u201cthe new venue\u201d where the examinations were to take place \u2013 Car Park C.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Invitation for mammogram\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stragnell.com\/weaklynews\/2010\/september\/new_venue.jpg?resize=525%2C110\" alt=\"Invitation for mammogram\" width=\"525\" height=\"110\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Mangle\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stragnell.com\/weaklynews\/2010\/september\/mangle.jpg?resize=180%2C240\" alt=\"Mangle\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/>Now, I know we have a coalition government which is determined to cut public expenditure to the absolute bone (and beyond) but I hadn\u2019t realised that their cuts had already had such an immediate and dramatic impact. The image that came to me was of a dreary, drizzly car park with a long, winding queue of women of all shapes and sizes, naked from the waist up, slowly making their way up to a grubby technician in a white coat sat behind a cheap, formica table. The technician takes their details, gives them a quick visual check and then mangles their breasts in a \u201cnew and improved\u201d mammary mangling machine. Hey, there\u2019s a recession on and this is the best we can do!<\/p>\n<p>This got me thinking back to a video I had seen some time ago of an advertisement intended to encourage women to do a self-examination on a regular basis which I thought I would share with you. This is, allegedly, a real advertisement which was supposedly banned in Canada although I\u2019m not convinced I believe it. (I can believe it was a real advertisement; I can\u2019t believe that the Canadians would ban it but what do I know).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ukq3UD3q9Lc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And, while searching for that one I ran across the following which is equally amusing, I think.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xbVifPkbYsk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Still, they both make a serious point in a humourous and memorable way. So, to all the women in my life \u2013 either give Cam or those boy scouts a call today. Alternatively, make sure you check yourself on a regular basis!<\/p>\n<p>Lots of pictures today. I ran across the following sports-related cartoons during the week. The first rather sums up Ms Playchute\u2019s attitude to the beginning of the football season; the second the somewhat dubious use of Twitter by athletes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Football Season\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stragnell.com\/weaklynews\/2010\/september\/football01.jpg?resize=525%2C175\" alt=\"Football Season\" width=\"525\" height=\"175\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Twitter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stragnell.com\/weaklynews\/2010\/september\/football02.jpg?resize=300%2C368\" alt=\"Twitter\" width=\"300\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And finally, finally, there was a story on the Guardian web site about the development of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/lifeandstyle\/2010\/sep\/19\/worlds-hottest-chilli\" target=\"_blank\">world\u2019s hottest chilli<\/a>.
