Good morning on a tolerably, tolerable day – a bit fresh to be sure and somewhat grey but at least it’s dry (so far). Yesterday was glorious – bright and sunny with clear blue skies but fresh to the point of being positively frigid as the wind has turned round to blow from the northeast bringing way too much Arctic-like conditions our way. Snow in the highlands, even.

A man is recovering from surgery when the Surgical Nurse appears and asks him how he is feeling.
“I’m O. K. but I didn’t like the four letter-words the doctor used in surgery,” he answered.
“What did he say,” asked the nurse.
Good morning to you all and welcome to the last Sunday before (at least here in the UK) the clocks return to their proper place after the lunacy that is British Summer Time. For months our body clocks have been disrupted for no useful purpose because someone, somewhere decided that they could make the sun shine longer by altering the time on the clock face. I’ve got an even better idea – let’s put the clocks forward twelve hours each Spring and then we can be truly amazed at how much sunlight there is at midnight every day! OK, we’re back after a wonderfully enjoyable weekend with friends on the south coast – sorry for the interruption to your normal service. We drove down on Friday afternoon for a performance at the Brighton Comedy Festival by Jack Dee. (I was going to include a link to a YouTube video to give those of you who don’t know of him a feel for his comedy. After searching for several minutes, however, I was unable to find a clip which didn’t include, at some stage, a torrent of four-letter language of which I know my mother would not approve. So, for those of you who don’t know his act, you’ll have to search for yourself). Wikipedia describes his comedy as “sarcastic, witty and deadpan” which is a pretty good description. I would add “acerbic” as well, partly because it’s such a great-sounding word but also because it describes his humour fairly well. Continue reading “15 October 2012”
I warned you last week that we might be late this week – and so it has proved. We’re down on the South Coast visiting friends and attending Jack Dee’s performance at the Brighton Comedy Festival. I may get something posted later today once we return to beautiful downtown Byfield or perhaps tomorrow. In the meantime, however, I ran across the following from The Other Coast on Friday which certainly paints an accurate portrait of our Molly’s halitosis.
And, just to ensure your disappointment is complete, the following from Shoe was simply too true to ignore, especially in the current electoral season:

This guy was watching TV as his wife was out cutting the grass during the hot summer. He finally worked up the energy to go out and ask his wife what was for supper. Well, his missus was quite irritated about him sitting in the air-conditioned house all day while she did all the work, so she scolded him. “I can’t believe you’re asking me about supper right now! Imagine I’m out of town, go inside and figure dinner out yourself.”
So he went back in the house and fixed himself a big steak, with potatoes, garlic bread and tall glass of iced tea. The wife finally walked in about the time he was finishing up and asked him, “You fixed something to eat? So where is mine?”

Good morning on a fine, fine morning in downtown Byfield. Now that the mist has cleared, it’s another fine autumnal morning with a bright blue sky and golden sunshine. Researchers at Yale University say that chocolate may be good for pregnant women. However, they say it is not necessarily good for women who just look pregnant.
Good morning on a reasonably splendid-looking morning with the added bonus of a favourable weather forecast for the day. Quite a contrast to the beginning of the week when parts of the UK had two months’ worth of rain in two days which, not surprisingly, led to widespread flooding. As the Guardian put it:
Britain’s Indian summer has been turned into little more than a wistful memory after almost the entire average rainfall for September fell within 24 hours.
We’ll have to wait and see if Sunday/Monday’s deluge was but a brief interruption to some fine, Indian summer-type weather or whether we are due to settle back into our normal routine of rain, rain, and then, just for a change, more rain. Continue reading “30 September 2012”
